Survey on Beggars in Dhaka City
In order to stop begging at main road crossings of Dhaka city and rehabilitate them in respectful occupation 3 NGOs namely BEDO, BRCT and SKS Foundation formed a Consortium of Partner Organizations (CPO) to submit a Development Proposal (DPP) to Department of Social Services (DSS) under Ministry of Social Welfare for seeking financial support from the government. Before formulating the DPP the CPO conducted a sample survey among the beggars begging at main road crossings of Dhaka city in February 2009. Total 456 beggars were interviewed.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Govt. of Bangladesh, has undertaken a program to stop begging in Dhaka city and rehabilitate the beggars through imparting training on income generating activities under the project “Rehabilitation & Alternative Employment Program for the people Engaged in Begging”. In connection with this project 10 NGOs including BEDO and its partner NGOs conducted a one day survey of 10,000 beggars in Dhaka Metropolitan City on 30 September 2011. Out of this number BEDO and its partner NGOs conducted survey on 1,000 beggars in Zone # 7 of Dhaka Metropolitan city.
